Austin Heat

Austin Heat maps how hot every part of Austin runs on a summer afternoon, and shows what would change if the city’s dark roofs went cool, green or solar.

What it does

  • A block-by-block map of summer surface temperature, roof area and the share of dark roofs
  • Type your address to see how hot your block runs compared with the rest of the city, and what cool roofs would do there
  • A scenario tool: convert 10–100% of dark roofs to cool, green or solar, across the city or just its hottest fifth, and see the change in air and surface temperature, energy dollars, CO₂, heat-related EMS calls, stormwater and cost per degree
  • Every number comes from open data (Landsat satellite temperature, building footprints, City of Austin permits) and published research, with the caveats shown next to the results
  • No account and nothing to sign up for. Built for residents, neighbourhood groups and city decision-makers
